New Launch of Motorola Moto G5 vs G5 Plus in MWC 2017

About Motorola

Motorola Mobility was established in 2011 following the split of Motorola into two companies, with Motorola Solutions catering to the enterprise segment. Acquired soon after by Google, Motorola Mobility was sold to Lenovo in 2014. Motorola made its first Android smartphone in 2009, and its first Android tablet in 2011.

Motorola has announced the G5 and G5 Plus at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, following several months of speculation.

The kings of budget have returned with a metal jacket, but which will be the Moto for you? Here is the difference between the Moto G5 and the Moto G5 Plus.

Motorola Moto G5 vs G5 Plus: Design
Moto G5 Plus bigger and heavier
Both have metal body
Both have front-mounted fingerprint sensor
The Motorola Moto G5 and G5 Plus share a very similar design, more so than the Moto G4 and the G4 Plus. They both offer a metal build, along with the signature "M" below the Moto Z-like large circular camera housing on the rear that encompasses both the lens and the flash module.

Motorola Moto G5 vs G5 Plus: Display
Moto G5 Plus has larger display
Moto G5 has slightly sharper display
G5 Plus has Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection
The Motorola Moto G5 comes with a 5-inch display while the Moto G5 Plus has a slightly larger 5.2-inch display.

Both screens offer a Full HD resolution, which puts their pixel densities at 440ppi and 423ppi, respectively. This means the smaller G5 will theoretically have a sharper, crisper display but a difference this small wouldn't be noticeable to the human eye.

Motorola Moto G5 vs G5 Plus: Camera

Moto G5 Plus offers more advanced camera
Both come with 5MP wide-angle front camera
Moto G5 Plus has Dual Autofocus Pixels
The Motorola Moto G5 comes with a 13-megapixel rear camera with phase-detection autofocus, 1.1µm pixels, an aperture of f/2.0 and an LED flash. Its front-facing camera is 5-megapixels with a wide-angle lens, 1.4µm pixels and an aperture of f/2.2. There is also a display flash on board.

The Moto G5 Plus has a 12-megapixel Dual Autofocus Pixels rear camera with 1.4µm pixels, an aperture of f/1.7 and a colour-balancing dual LED flash. Despite having a lower resolution than the G5, Motorola has said the G5 Plus offers the most advanced camera in its class, hammering home what we all know: megapixels aren't everything.

Motorola Moto G5 vs G5 Plus: Hardware

Faster processor on Moto G5 Plus
Both offer 3GB of RAM
Moto G5 Plus has larger battery capacity
The Motorola Moto G5 comes with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 chip, while the Moto G5 Plus comes with the slightly faster and more capable Snapdragon 625. Both offer 3GB of RAM in the UK, though there are some G5 models that have 2GB in other countries.

The G5 has 16GB internal storage as standard and a 2800mAh battery, while the G5 Plus has 32GB as standard and a 3000mAh battery. Both have microSD support for storage expansion up to 128GB.

Motorola Moto G5 vs G5 Plus: Price

Moto G5 Plus more expensive
The Motorola Moto G5 will go on sale in March for £169, while the Moto G5 Plus will go on sale in late April for £269, putting £100 difference between these two models.

Motorola Moto G5 vs G5 Plus: Conclusion
The Moto G5 Plus has a larger display, faster processor, better camera, more internal base storage and a slightly larger battery capacity over the Moto G5.

It also offers NFC and quick charging, though all of these extras come at a cost. If your budget allows for it, the Moto G5 Plus appears to be the Moto to go for on paper, but as the G4 and G4 Plus proved, bigger isn't always better.
